On Monday, July 19, LeBron James' Twitter feed read: "The biggest mistake you can make in life is fearing that you will make one! STOP! Everyone makes mistakes! Just live & learn!"
Should you worry about making mistakes? Should you sweat because you’re worried about turning the basketball over, fumbling the football or even switching schools for a better sports program?
Caution is advised, but go with “live and learn.” Shoot the final shot even though it may bounce off the backboard. Dive for the fly ball even though you may fall ridiculously and miss it. Otherwise, it will be difficult to move forward and develop as a player. We can all learn from LeBron and his mindset.
Most of you will have to work a little harder than LeBron to get to the next level. You have to decide how much time and energy to put in to your sport—this week, this year. That commitment may feel overwhelming and long, and it may become even longer if you’re losing. But is winning the most important thing? Maybe not, but a game can always be “more than a game.” [Check out LeBron and his More Than A Game co-stars at STACK Magazine's cover shoot.] And it is always much more than a game for those dedicated and unafraid to make those mistakes.
