Although it's only November, some states have their first coverings of snow, hinting that winter is on the way. But before you hit the slopes to work on new tricks, first head to the gym and make sure you’re fit enough to last the entire season.
For pro snowboarder Ellery Hollingsworth, off-season work means training with Brad Jones, owner and director of the B Project training facility in Carlsbad, Calif.
“Being a pro snowboarder is, in my opinion, the best thing that could ever happen,” Hollingsworth says. “[Yet], training is a big part of that...and training with Brad is really important as well. When you get to a certain level in action sports, you need to pay attention to your body, and working out is so important to prevent injuries. You’ll have more success if you’re in the best shape.”
Hollingsworth's training goals during her short off-season are to strengthen her total body and coordinate her muscle groups so she can increase speed and explosion when she hits the halfpipe.
“What we are working on is the relationship between the knee, hip and the trunk, having those coordinate together so that they move all as one,” Jones says. “They support each other and create the mechanics to where Ellery can get as much power out of that hip as possible. Our overall goal with Ellery is incorporating torso strength and core strength, incorporating single-leg strength, as well as...a constant progression of speed and explosiveness.”
