Movie Preview: “Win Win”

February 4, 2011

Bonds between athletes and coaches develop quickly—and they often carry over from sports to the game of life. Trust, respect and friendship remain long after every season. Players call their mentors “coach” no matter how much time has passed. This March, Fox Searchlight Pictures will highlight these bonds with their Sundance Festival hit film Win Win.

In the game of life, you can’t lose 'em all. When high school wrestling coach Mike Flaherty [played by Paul Giamatti] is down on his luck, help appears in the person of a 119-pound mop-top teenager, Kyle Timmons [played by Hunterdon Central High School (Flemington, NJ) junior Alex Shaffer, who is in fact the 119-pound 2010 New Jersey state wrestling champ].

When Coach Flaherty meets Kyle, a talented but struggling teen searching for a new life, he feels compelled to offer the support and encouragement the young athlete desperately needs. And although the two don't always see eye-to-eye, their ability to trust each other on and off the mat creates a win-win situation.
