Two football programs steeped in tradition will break long-established customs tomorrow, and in more ways than one.
On Saturday, Sept. 10, the University of Michigan versus Notre Dame, a rivalry that originated in 1887, will be played under the lights at "the Big House" in Ann Arbor, the first night game in the 84-year history of Michigan Stadium.
It’s called the Big House for a reason: it's the largest stadium in all of college football, and school officials expect a beyond-capacity crowd, which could potentially eclipse the 115,000 mark.
The Wolverines and Fighting Irish will further solidify their places in history by wearing throwback uniforms. USA Today’s Erick Smith offers some insight on the throwbacks: “The Wolverines uniforms merge elements of jerseys throughout the school’s history. Player numbers will also appear on Michigan’s famous winged helmet for the first time since the late 1960s.” And for the Fighting Irish: “Notre Dame will wear a white jersey with green lettering and two green shoulder stripes. A large shamrock logo appears on the traditional gold helmet for the first time since the early 1960s.”
Both programs collaborated with adidas on the design elements of the throwback uniforms. You can watch history unfold, as the ESPN College Gameday crew will be broadcasting live from Ann Arbor. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. EST, tomorrow night.
