What Is Retro Studios Working On?

June 20, 2012 | Christian Miller

Retro Studios
Ever since Retro Studios launched the critically acclaimed Donkey Kong Country Returns, the Texas-based video game developer has kept mum on its current project.

During an interview at the 2012 E3 conference, Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo denied that Retro was allocating resources to the development of a Zelda game and debunked rumors that they were creating a Star Fox-Metroid crossover for the Wii U.

So what is Retro working on? Many gamers have speculated that it's a sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns, but it seems unlikely that a sequel to one of the most successful Wii titles would be kept so secret. Others have suggested they are developing the first true HD Metroid game for the Wii U. Then again, Retro might be modernizing a gaming classic like the Mother franchise—commonly referred to as Earth Bound in North America—a game fans outside Japan never got a chance to play.

It seems that any Nintendo franchise Retro touches turns to gold, and their Midas touch might be responsible for the secrecy. Whether Retro is developing a new game or reviving an old franchise, Nintendo fans are eagerly awaiting information on the studio’s current project.
