Baltimore Orioles centerfielder Adam Jones stopped by the PlayStation Experience truck at the MLB All-Star FanFest event in Kansas City July 9. Before Jones went head-to-head with Cleveland Indians closing pitcher Chris Perez in the Home Run Derby on MLB 12: The Show, the two-time All Star and Gold-Glove winner explained what it’s like to appear in a video game, revealed his all-time favorite sports game, and shared his strategy for mashing home runs with a joystick.

MLB 12 The Show With Adam Jones

It's a humbling experience being portrayed in a video game like MLB 12: The Show, Jones says.

On his favorite features of The Show:

With the modern technology and the graphics, the players in the game look like they do in real life. They’ve got the stances down, how they wear their uniforms—if they wear long pants or they wear them high—if they have one sleeve, if they have tattoos. It’s all about attention to detail, and with the modern technology, I think that’s how it should be.

On the experience of being featured in a video game:

It’s a humbling thing to be in the game. I haven’t played baseball games in the last few years due to the fact that now I’m in the games. I let my nephew play. He plays with the Orioles and tells me about every game he plays and how many hits I had, or if I’m slumping.

On his all-time favorite video game:

Still to this day, my favorite baseball game is All-Star Baseball ’99 with Larry Walker on the cover. I had it for Nintendo 64. It was the best baseball game to me, still to this day. It was the realest game.

On gaming with family:

Me, my cousins and my brothers, we’re all into Madden. That’s the game of choice in our household. If I’m not playing with family, I’ll play at home on the Internet. I’ll play random people online in Madden.

On his love for the Home Run Derby on The Show:

All you got to do is swing. You don’t have to make the plays, don’t have to risk messing up and throwing the ball to the wrong base. Just swing.
