2 Dribbling Drills to Improve Your On-Court Game

Must See Basketball Videos

Dribbling is one of the most underrated skills in basketball. If you cannot dribble effortlessly, you won't be able to move fluidly around the court. Plus, your mind will be focused on the task of dribbling, rather than on making a shot or a pass. (Check out Dwyane Wade's skills workout.)

Below are two dribbling drills, courtesy of the Kansas Basketball Academy Foundation, that mimic game situations and encourage you to finish strong. Perform them two or three times per week until your dribbling becomes second nature.

3 Spots

Number of players: 3-6

Equipment: Cones, stopwatch, whistle

  • Place cones inside the three-point line at each wing and in the middle
  • Start at half court and speed dribble toward cone
  • At cone, make a dribble move (inside/out, crossover, behind the back, between the legs)
  • Finish with a jump shot or speed dribble to the hoop for a layup
  • Repeat at other cones

Sets/Duration: 1x3 minutes for layup and jump shot

Coast-to-Coast

Number of players: 2-5

Equipment: 3 chairs and basketballs

  • Set up chairs at backcourt free-throw line, half court line and frontcourt free throw line
  • Starting at backcourt baseline, sprint to chair at backcourt free-throw line and make dribble move
  • Speed dribble to half court chair and make another dribble move
  • Speed dribble to chair at frontcourt free throw line, make a dribble move and finish with layup or jump shot

Sets/Duration: 1x3 minutes for layup and jump shot
