How to Handle Stress Headaches

February 1, 2013 | Featured in the Winter 2013 Issue

Q: I get bad headaches when I’m stressed. How can I handle them?

Stress headaches have many triggers, including lack of sleep, skipping meals, bad posture and yes, stress. Proper rest, regular meals and drinking enough water (eight to 10 glasses per day) can help stop these headaches before they strike.

When brain pain does hit, try rubbing the bones behind your ears with your thumbs for about two minutes. If that doesn’t help, an over-the-counter medicine may be effective. But if you need meds more than a few times a week, see a doctor.
