This Week's Top Rap Releases (Feb. 5)

February 6, 2013 | Shay M.

As we enter the month of February, we are welcomed by some great projects from Joe Budden, the Louie V Mob and a posthumous release from J. Dilla.

Joe Budden, No Love Lost

No Love Lost is Budden's third solo studio album (fifth if you include the download-only LPs). What sets this one apart is that it's the first to feature several guest artists. Mainstream acts Kirko Bangz, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, French Montana, Juicy J, Lloyd Banks and singers Omarion, Emanny and Tank all make appearances. His Slaughterhouse cohorts Royce da 5'9", Joell Ortiz and Crooked I also contribute to the finished product.

According to Budden, the LP shows his progress as a rapper. The introspective lyrics he's become known for have taken on more meaning in this collection, telling the story of a man who has done a lot of living and walked away with several lessons learned. (Find out which rapper is learning lessons the hard way by doing time.)

J. Dilla, Music From the Lost Scrolls Vol. 1

The 10-inch posthumous release from one of the greatest hip-hop producers will feature four original, previously unreleased songs. The tracks will reportedly confirm Dilla's place in history and even find the beat maker stepping from behind the MPC to drop a few rap bars. Compiled by Dilla's long time collaborator Frank Nitt, the songs feature a verse from his brother Illa J over the song "The Throwaway." The project is being sold exclusively via Fat Beats.

In celebration of February being designated as Dilla month, the late artists' mother, Maureen Yancey, is auctioning off albums previously owned by Dilla every week on EBay. His personal recordings won't be included, but fans will get a numbered and signed certificate. In other news, the second annual Dilla Day concert in Detroit will feature Talib Kweli and Royce da 5'9".

Louie V Mob, New World Order

Louie V Mob, a trio consisting of southern rappers Master P, Fat Trel and Alley Boy, will release their first project, New World Order, this week. They've announced no plans to release an official album yet, but the mixtape appears to be an attempt to test fan base reception. It comes on the heels of Master P's rap game resurgence. He recently released a mixtape of his own titled Al Capone to drum up anticipation for his forthcoming album, Boss of all Bosses: The Godfather Album. Quality isn't guaranteed, but there will at minimum be a few hood beats to bop to. The biggest selling point? It's free.
