Basketball shoes are for the court, cleats are for turf sports like baseball and football, and high-end expensive sneakers are for nights out on the town. Right?

Maybe not. Recently some players seem to have grown bored with their sport’s conventional footwear and are mixing things up a bit.

Dress shoes in a marathon, Air Jordans on the pitcher’s mound, Dolce & Gabana kicks on the hardwood? Strange as it sounds, athletes have recently tried all of these, with varying degrees of success. Here’s a short history of some of those footwear experiments and how they turned out.
