When it came out, Final Fantasy X was probably the most aesthetically pleasing game on the market for PlayStation 2. And despite bitter fanboys clutching their copies of FFVII and decrying the game's whiny protagonist, Tidus, FFX delivered exciting combat, engaging levels of weapon customization, and a big, beautiful world to explore. The game was so popular, it warranted a direct sequel, FFX-2.

A recent post on the offical PlayStation Blog by the game's producer, Yoshinori Kitase, confirmed that gamers will once again be able to visit the world of Spira, now in HD. He writes, "Just in time for PAX East, I am excited to announce that FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster will be coming to North America this year for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita."

Although the official release date is unknown, Kitase promises more information in the near future. Of course, this will likely reawaken demand for a FFVII remake—and honestly, the world deserves it. Until hell freezes over, Final Fantasy gamers will look forward to fighting the gargantuan beast, Sin.

It will be interesting to see how well the game sells. With many debating the relevance and vitality of JRPGs (Japanese Role Playing Games) these days, this remaster could either be just what hungry fans need or the sign of a dying genre.
