During a press panel for Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn played up the connection between the upcoming movie and The Avengers, hinting that the outcome of his film will have an effect on the plot of the upcoming sequel.
"We're created in a way that we're very connected to the movies that came before us. We're even more connected to The Avengers 2, that comes after us, and so in that respect, what we would hope is that these characters would continue, and that at some point in time, they'll all meet up with different characters throughout the galaxy," said the director.
It's reasonable to think that the characters from the two movies would collide at some point, considering they share a common goal—taking down Thanos. Time travel will have to play role to make that happen. According to reports, the forthcoming Guardians movie will take place far in the future, circa 2045.
The script, currently being re-worked by Gunn, will center on Peter Quill, a human-alien hybrid astronaut. Quill becomes a Star-Lord and assembles a team of Guardians to help carry out his mission to save the galaxy. Rocket Raccoon will reportedly be "the heart of the movie," although an actor has not yet been named to play the role. Chris Pratt is Quill. Zoe Saldana and MMA star Dave Bautista are rumored to be cast as Gamora, adopted daughter of Thanos, and Drax the Destroyer, respectively. And Michael Rooker has reportedly joined to portray Yondu.
Guardians of the Galaxy is slated to hit the silver screen on August 1, 2014, a few months ahead of The Avengers 2, which is set to arrive May 1, 2015. (Find out what other Marvel movies are on their way!)
