Last week at CinemaCon, Sony announced plans to release a sequel to 2012's 21 Jump Street.

A sequel had been under consideration since studio executives witnessed the winning relationship between actors Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Now that Hill is linking back up with co-writer Michael Bacall to craft the script, things are moving ahead.

The first movie, based on the 1980s TV series of the same name, featured bumbling cops Schmidt and Jenko, portrayed by Hill and Tatum. Thanks to their ability to pass as students, the unlikely pair successfully infiltrate a high school to detect who is pushing a deadly drug concoction. The flick was surprisingly hilarious and a box-office hit, pulling in more than $200 million.

The sequel will most likely move the undercover duo up to the college ranks to solve a new case, but additional plot details have yet to be released. It is also unclear who, aside from the two leading men, will be returning to the film. Hill and Tatum also signed on as executive producers. Dave Franco and Brie Larson are rumored to be involved somehow. But directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are not attached to the project—yet. In fact, they are currently tackling Lego: The Piece of Resistance for Warner Bros.

21 Jump Street (the sequel) is expected to hit theaters some time next year. In the precursor TV show, Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise formed the buddy cop duo. It is credited with launching Depp's career. Both made cameo appearances in the film.
