How do you respond after an off year? Some practice harder, others change their diet. Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier? He built a state-of-the art training facility in the back yard of his off-season home in Chandler, Ariz.
“I want to be able to stay consistent and strong,” Ethier says. “I noticed that during the past couple of years I was a little mentally beat down because my physical side was lacking. It wasn’t lacking when I was working out. That’s something I wanted to re-establish in my off-season training, and I’ve done that by building this place.”
The two-story prefabricated metal shed Ethier constructed houses a complete weight room, a Woodway treadmill for speed training, a Power Plate vibration-training machine and Keiser air-resistance equipment.
“Anything you could imagine you’d want to train with, we have here,” Ethier says.
But that’s not all Ethier has tucked away in “The Shed.” His fitness funhouse also includes a turfed batting cage area, a full kitchen staffed by professional chefs on training days, and, of course, a play area for kids— so when other big leaguers show up to get a pump, the little ones won’t be bored.
STACK sat in on a three-hour workout with Ethier and Dustin Pedroia, led by Athletes’ Performance Coach Jon Barlow, to see how they prepared for the season ahead.
