Electronic Arts and Maxis have announced plans to release The Sims 4 next year. EA revealed the news in a blog post on its site in which they eeassured fans that developers knew about the issues with this year's SimCity and were working to ensure that the problems wouldn't be repeated in The Sims 4.

"The Sims 4 celebrates the heart and soul of the Sims themselves, giving players a deeper connection with the most expressive, surprising and charming Sims ever in this single-player offline experience," reads the post, which credits fans for the franchise's continuation. "The Sims 4 encourages players to personalize their world with new and intuitive tools while offering them the ability to effortlessly share their creativity with friends and fans."

That's right! EA is abandoning the always-online requirement that has plagued the game. Surely, this should please The Sims' massive fan base, which is still deciding whether to remain with the series. At a special VIP briefing, the company even enlisted "top fans" from all over the world to speak with the creative team about the forthcoming game and invited to them continue taking advantage of "special access to the development team," as Maxis and EA work to repair their image.

No additional information has been forthcoming about the "new and intuitive tools." But fans interested in tracking progress on the game can subscribe to the official website.

The Sims 3, which was released in June 2009, sold more than 150 million copies. The Sims 4 will be available on PC and Mac. At this time, no plans have been revealed to bring the game to consoles.
