Jeff Bridges is Gregory the Spook in Dark Fantasy ‘Seventh Son’
In the dark fantasy adventure film Seventh Son, based on Joseph Delaney’s novel The Spook’s Apprentice, actor Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia) plays Thomas Ward, the magical seventh son of a seventh son. In this supernatural tale, Master Gregory the Spook, played by Jeff Bridges, must contend with the powerful and vengeful witch Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), who has escaped after being imprisoned centuries ago by Gregory. Gregory’s mission is to protect humankind from evil, but his only hope to defeat Malkin and her followers is to enlist the help of the apprentice wizard—Tom Ward, the seventh son.
To be released in 3D and IMAX 3D, the film differs significantly from Delaney’s novel, the first installment in The Wardstone Chronicles. Some fans of the books may be disappointed with changes to the story, but there is reason to think this epic movie will do well at the box office.
In addition to a first-rate cast of established stars and popular newcomers, the picture was directed by two-time Academy Award winner Sergei Bodrov. The screenplay was written by Matt Greenberg (Reign of Fire), along with Chuck Leavitt (Blood Diamond) and Max Borenstein. The supporting cast includes Kit Harington (HBO’s Game of Thrones) and Swedish beauty Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina) playing a young witch who becomes Ward’s love interest.
The newly released trailer (watch it below) is visually stunning, promising an imaginative action-adventure with a meaty storyline.
Seventh Son will hit theaters Jan. 17, 2014.
