Cuba Gooding Jr. stars in the drama Life of a King, based on the true story of an ex-convict determined to give inner city kids in Washington D.C. a shot at a better life.

Discovering what can be learned from the game of chess during his 18-year incarceration for bank robbery, Eugene Brown (Gooding Jr.) decides to share his new-found knowledge and wisdom with at-risk youth. Following his release from prison, he finds a job as a high school janitor and creates the Big Chair Chess Club for the school's students.

The film follows Brown's struggles to establish the club, teach chess to rebellious kids in detention and challenge the kids to participate in their first local competitions.

The film also stars Dennis Haysbert (The Unit), LisaGay Hamilton (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and Thurston Hill, best known for the TV series The Beast.

Directing the picture is Jake Goldberger, who wrote the screenplay with Dan Wetzel and actor/writer David Scott.

The trailer highlights the parallels between Brown's own difficulties trying to make it on the outside after serving time in prison and the challenges of the teens to stay out of trouble and work toward a promising future.

Life of a King will hit theaters Jan. 17, 2014.
