It's official; A deal has been struck between Paramount Pictures and China Film Group Corporation to produce a 3D Marco Polo adventure movie.
The announcement of this collaboration was made at the Beijing International Film Festival. The fantasy, sci-fi picture, centering on the life of the famous 13th Century merchant-turned-explorer, is scheduled to begin shooting in October. This news comes on the heels of the announcement that Marco Polo's epic adventures will be chronicled in an original Netflix series.
The producers are hiring American director Rob Cohen to lead the project. Cohen's best-known films include: Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, The Fast and the Furious and XXX.
According to the filmmakers, the movie will be rooted in history, but due to its fantasy and action elements, it will be more than a typical biopic. The life of the legendary explorer has been a popular subject in films over the years, including a 2007 made-for-TV movie starring Ian Somerhalder.
Paramount and China Film Group Corporation both expressed the opinion that the movie will appeal to audiences in China as well as in other parts of the world.
