Latest Guy Ritchie Flick Won’t Be Your Father’s ‘U.N.C.L.E.’
Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that The Man From U.N.C.L.E. will be released Jan. 16. Directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie, the movie is the latest big screen adaptation of a classic spy TV series, following popular film franchises like The Avengers and Mission Impossible.
Set during the height of the Cold War, the film centers on two fierce political adversaries, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin, as they are compelled to put aside their differences and join forces to disable a powerful international crime organization. The mysterious and extremely dangerous organization is determined to disrupt the delicate balance of power between nations by proliferating nuclear weapons and technology. With the daughter of a missing German scientist as their only lead, Solo and Kuryakin have their work cut out for them as they race against time to prevent global disaster.
Starring as Solo is Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill. In the role of Kuryakin is Armie Hammer, best known for The Social Network and, more recently, The Lone Ranger. The impressive cast also features Hugh Grant as Waverly, Mad Men’s Jared Harris as Sanders, Alicia Vikander (The Fifth Estate) as Gaby Teller, and Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) in the role of Victoria Vinciguerra.
Collaborating with Guy Ritchie on the screenplay was Lionel Wigram, who previously worked with Ritchie on Sherlock Holmes. Other writers credited include Jeff Kleeman (Misconceptions), David Campbell Mitchell, and creator of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. TV series, Sam Rolfe.
