Five Awesome Throwback (and ‘Fauxback’) Caps Worn By MLB Teams in 2015
Modern Major League Baseball caps are cool, which is why you probably own at least two of them. But the game has had great style throughout its history, which is why it’s always a treat when a team brings back a uniform from yesteryear, or a cap and jersey combo that dates back to the old Negro Leagues.
During the first few months of the 2015 season, several teams sported awesome throwbacks, and others donned special edition or commemorative caps. Here are five standouts:
Oakland Athletics 1960s Throwback Cap
The Oakland A’s took things back to the 1960s when they rocked these throwback caps on June 27. The green hats with interlocking “KC” lettering pays homage to the team’s Kansas City roots, as the franchise first came in to existence as the Kansas City Athletics.
Tampa Bay Rays “Fauxback” Cap
It’s a little hard for the Tampa Bay Rays to turn back the clock, since the team came into the league in 1998. So when they played against the Boston Red Sox earlier this season and needed to match their opponent’s 1970s throwbacks, they busted out a “fauxback” cap and uniform. The two-tone blue cap with a little yellow mixed into the logo worked perfectly, even if it was never actually worn before.
Arizona Diamondbacks Purple and Green Throwback Cap
Whenever you see the Arizona Diamondbacks purple and green caps and uniforms, it takes you back to the days of Randy Johnson, Luis Gonzalez and the D-Backs beating the New York Yankees in the World Series. The team’s colors have changed, but the D-Backs still rock their old threads—and that awesome purple and green cap—each and every Thursday this season.
Boston Red Sox Turn Back the Clock
The Red Sox sported this logo-free, all-blue cap earlier in the season, in a series against the Seattle Mariners, and they brought it back again in late June. The cap’s simple, elegant design honors the team’s Negro League affiliate, the Boston Royal Giants.
Cleveland Indians Go Cleveland Buckeyes
In another act of homage to the Negro League, the Cleveland Indians became the Cleveland Buckeyes earlier this season, trading their traditional red block “C” for a cursive version with far more flair.
