LeBron James isn’t your average sports parent.
While we would dissuade most parents from jumping into their son’s pre-game huddle and delivering a fiery speech, King James gets some leeway. That’s what four NBA MVP awards and 14 NBA All-Star selections will do for you.
Footage recently surfaced of LeBron spitting knowledge to the North Coast Blue Chips AAU team, which his 13-year-old son, LeBron Jr., is a member of. The message was simple—if you aren’t willing to sacrifice for a greater goal, team sports like basketball simply aren’t for you (warning: explicit language):
“If you don’t want a role, play tennis or play golf.”

“We got Hall of Famers and some of the best players to ever play the game came off the bench—or didn’t play. That don’t mean you ain’t good. There’s guys in the NBA that don’t play. Does that mean they not good? They got to the NBA because they were sorry? (No), they’re just playing a role. If you don’t want a role, play tennis or play golf. Because then you can do what the [expletive] you want to do, and then you’ve got nobody else to blame because it’s only an individual sport. If that’s what you want to do, play tennis or play golf. But if you want to play a team sport, there’s going to be things you’ve got to give up to get what you want,” James says.
The North Coast Blue Chips went on to win the USBA National Championship, so suffice to say the team took LeBron’s message to heart.
