At the Plate With Torii Hunter: Eating to Maintain Power
LA Angels right fielder Torii Hunter used to open his refrigerator in the morning and ask the same two questions you might ask: "What's for breakfast, and who's going to make it?" With his family in Dallas and without cooking skills of his own, Hunter signed up with Sunfare, a home delivery food service operating in his two homes-away-from-home, Los Angeles and Tempe, Ariz., the Angels' spring training base.
Hunter laughs as he reminisces about spring training with the Minnesota Twins, where he spent his first nine MLB seasons. "We stayed next to a Waffle House," he says. "[Former Twins teammates] LaTroy Hawkins, Jacque Jones and myself would go to breakfast there just about every morning and then go to the stadium. That was pretty cool, but I don't go there any more."
Indeed, the nine-time Gold Glover has come a long way since his Waffle House days, both geographically and nutritionally.
With Sunfare, Hunter receives food at his doorstep. The Sunfare system, however, is unlike your typical pizza or chow mein delivery operation. Meals are prepared from fresh ingredients, tailored to your taste, and customized to meet your nutritional goals. Everything you need to fuel throughout the day is in the kit.
Hunter's plan, for example, comprises three meals and three snacks for a daily intake of 2,800 to 3,000 calories. "That helps keep my strength and weight up," he says, "so I'm able to perform better and at a higher level."
The 2009 American League Silver Slugger explains that maintaining weight is the key to his power and consistency at the plate. "When you lose weight, your bat gets heavy and you get tired from playing every day. Keeping my weight up helps keep my energy and strength up, so I'm able to grip that bat in August and September."
Hunter is so high on Sunfare that he opted for their service over that of the personal chef he employed during his first two seasons in LA. "The Sunfare meals are so convenient," he says. "They're already prepared, and each container is labeled so you know what you're eating and when to eat it."
