Fans are thrilled over the news that one of the world's biggest action stars, Dwayne Johnson, will be taking on the role of the world's first superhero, Doc Savage. The actor made the announcement via Instagram, expressing his excitement by saying: "But here's the No. 1 reason I'm excited to become Doc Savage. HE'S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!" He added: "Can't wait to sink my teeth into this one-of-a-kind character."
Few people realize that Superman was largely based on Doc Savage, who was trained from infancy to be the perfect human specimen. In many ways his father and the team of scientists who developed his physical and mental abilities succeeded. With his genius level IQ, the character became a brilliant scientist. He had heightened senses and amazing strength, but he lacked Superman's charm. One of the most endearing things about Savage was his lack of social graces. He had a tendency to be shockingly direct, not unlike a version of The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper, with super powers.
Considering Johnson's talent for comedy, playing over the top characters, and action, it's easy to imagine him in the role. We haven't seen him play this kind of superhero yet, but the Rock was popular in his depiction of mythical hero Hercules. He will get another shot at the superhero genre when he stars in the highly anticipated Shazam, due out in 2019.
Filmmakers are hoping this big screen adaptation, based on the pulp novels of the 1930s and 40s, will go into production next year. The movie will be written and directed by Shane Black, best known for Iron Man 3 and new release The Nice Guys.
