Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family that's frequently included in Indian cuisine. It's often ground up and added to curry dishes to give them their distinctive flavor. A one tablespoon serving of turmeric contains just 24 calories while serving up 6 percent of your daily fiber, 16 percent of your daily iron and 26 percent of your daily manganese. Turmeric has also been found to aid in pain relief and reduce inflammation.

Curcumin, a substance found almost exlusively in turmeric, apparently has impressive cancer-fighting capabilities. According to the Mayo Clinic, "laboratory and animal research suggests that curcumin may prevent cancer, slow the spread of cancer, make chemotherapy more effective and protect healthy cells from damage by radiation therapy."
