Nike's Best Ball Ever?
The 2010 FIFA World Cup is over and summer is winding down, which can only mean one thing: it's time for club football (meaning "soccer" for all you Yanks). With the transfer window closing, the world's top three leagues—the English Premier League, the Spanish La Liga and the Italian Serie A League—will kick off their new seasons with the best signing of the summer, the new Nike Total 90 Tracer soccer ball.
On the Premier League's website, Chris Bond, Nike general manager of soccer equipment, states, "As the game gets even faster and more competitive around the world, we've designed a product to exceed the demands of today's players, from the amateur to elite levels."
The Total 90 Tracer, which went through rigorous testing, is designed to enhance accuracy, touch and visibility, helping players hit their targets with greater precision. One test showed that the T90 Tracer could consistently hit a three-foot-diameter bull's-eye when kicked by a machine that simulated an athlete's leg swing. The competitor's ball could only consistently hit a bull's-eye six feet in diameter.
Players are excited about the T90 Tracer hitting the pitch this year. Stoke City goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen (pictured below) told reporters, "We've been used to the Nike ball in the Premier League for 10 years now, and it has progressed. I think it is a better ball now than when it started."
Sorensen continues, "From a goalkeeper's point of view, you want confidence that you can make the ball do certain things—not the ball doing it on its own, because that puts unpredictability in there. As a goalkeeper, if the flight of the ball is not true to the strike, it's not a confidence builder."
