Ronda Rousey Might Headline UFC Debut on PPV
Ronda Rousey—who recently signed with UFC as their first female competitor—will likely headline a highly anticipated pay-per-view debut fight, according to UFC President Dana White.
Unless a higher profile championship fight—such as a heavyweight or light heavyweight title bout—crops up in the near future, White’s confident the PPV debut will go to Rousey. Her coming out party has been hotly anticipated by fight fans everywhere, eager to witness its effect on women’s MMA. (Check out all of STACK’s MMA material.)
Rousey’s opponent remains uncertain, although fans and analysts have predicted Cris Cyborg. “Our matchmakers have talked, and she doesn’t seem excited to fight Ronda,” commented White. Furthermore, Cyborg is currently suspended for failing a drug test, she is not presently competing at the bantamweight level—the division in which she would face Rousey.
Rousey was the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion; and upon signing with UFC, she automatically became the de facto UFC women’s bantamweight champion—a title that of course did not previously exist.
As the promotion continues to grow, UFC has added new weight divisions and championships. It remains unclear whether headlining a major PPV event featuring a brand new championship bout will prove successful for the organization, despite the current high level of excitement about UFC women fighters.
Ronda Rousey is currently 6-0 in her professional MMA career, with fights that have garnered her quite a reputation among MMA fans.
