Spinning to Success
Spinner [great last name for a BMXer], who spent most of last year recovering from injuries, was looking to impress the judges and the audience in his return to Dew Tour competition. But after barely making it out of the prelims during the week, he posted an 88.38 [.63 points higher than ninth place] to squeak into Saturday's finals.
STACK had interviewed Spinner at a previous competition, so we knew the slow start wouldn't ruffle his feathers. "When I'm riding good, I'm in a great mood," Spinner says. "Why get all hyped up? This is what I do every day."
One positive result of Spinner's injury-ridden season: he was able to develop new tricks, which until Saturday, were unprecedented. During his first run, he dropped one of them, the 1080 Turndown, which he sandwiched between a Quadruple Whip over the box and a Triple Tailwhip. With these moves, Mike quickly spun his way into first place. His first run score of 92.50 held off any challengers, and he claimed top spot on the podium for the first time since 2007.
Scores of the top five riders during Saturday's finals:
1. Mike Spinner, 92.50
2. Daniel Dhers, 92.13
3. Garrett Reynolds, 91.63
4. Mark Webb, 91.38
5. Ryan Nyquist, 90.88
