The Shooting Drill Behind Kevin Love's Amazing Performance

Want to shoot the basketball like Kevin Love? Use this drill to build rhythm and muscle memory to improve your outside shooting.

Cleveland Cavaliers star  forward Kevin Love led his team to a 116-78 win over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night, putting the Cavs up 3-2 in the Eastern Conference Finals. Love had an impressive shooting performance, scoring 25 points on 75 percent shooting from 3-point range and 80 percent from the field.

The three-time All-Star needed a good performance in Game 5. He simply did not play well in Games 3 and 4, scoring a combined 13 points on 19.8 percent shooting. The Cavs lost both games.

Behind every great performance are countless hours of preparation. Love performs a Cone Hop Shooting Drill that helps him knock down 3-pointers with ease when the pressure is on.

Phil Handy, an assistant coach for the Cavs who works with Love on this drill, says it's important to help replicate game movement for the Cavs big man.

"Hopping over a cone isn't necessarily game movement, but the hopping over, landing, changing direction and coming into your shot, that kind of replicates a lot of game movement," Handy said.

The drill helps Love get into rhythm on jump shots, and it's a solid tool to build muscle memory. Shooting as many shots as you can in practice is the key to becoming a good shooter, but the movement from cone to cone allows Love to practice shooting from his hot spots.

Handy said it's important for Love to keep a strong base, as defenders try to take away his weak hand. Though Love is a right-hand dominant player, it's important for him to be strong with both hands.

"We've been trying to really open up Kevin . . . to where he can go over both shoulders equally well," said Handy about Love's game in the post.
