Improve Your Touch Around the Rim

Become a better post player by improving your touch around the rim with two drills from STACK Expert Michael Coleman.

Battling for the rebound

Post players take a beating in the paint while fighting for rebounds. Anyone can rebound the ball if they have position, but it is an art to have touch around the rim. Here are a couple of drills to improve your skills near the basket, courtesy of the Kansas Basketball Academy Foundation-Wichita.

Up Top

  • Coach tosses the ball in the air near the basket
  • Jump with your arms and hands extended to meet the ball
  • While keeping the ball above your head, finish with a layup
  • Complete 10 layups to the left and 10 to the right
  • Keep your knees slightly bent to maintain a strong base, preventing you from getting pushed around

Pivot & Shoot

  • Use three spots: the left block, the right block and the middle of the lane
  • Start with your back to the basket 3 to 5 feet away
  • Coach lobs passes to you
  • From the left block: pivot right (toward the baseline) while holding the ball high and take a shot
  • Make five baskets to complete the drill
  • From the right block: pivot left (toward the baseline) while holding the ball high and take a shot
  • Make five baskets to complete the drill
  • Middle of lane: alternate pivoting left and right to make left- and right-handed layups
