Roy Hibbert, 7'2" center for the Indiana Pacers, improves his rebounding ability by increasing his single-leg strength, core stability and balance with the Single-Leg Stability Hold. This exercise involves Roy balancing on one leg while pressing a med ball into the wall. His strength coach, Shawn Windle, pushes Roy in various locations to try to make him lose balance over the course of the set. Roy must resist these pushes to maintain balance by activating his core and the smaller muscles of his ankle, knee and hip, just like he does out on the court when fighting for position under the hoop.
Windle explains that this drill makes Roy more effective when he is dealing with contact while reaching overhead for crucial rebounds once he's out on the court. This ability powered Roy's amazing Game 3 playoff performance against the Miami Heat in 2011, during which he netted 19 points, 18 rebounds and 5 blocks.
