Nike Basketball Releases 2014 Christmas Collection
The snow is falling, people in red and white Santa costumes are showing up at NBA arenas and December 25 is creeping closer on the wall calendar (if people still refer to them). It all leads up to one thing: the release of Nike Basketball’s annual Christmas Collection.
Once again, we find Nike’s three major signature athletes—Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Kevin Durant—getting their kicks made over in holiday themes. The KD 7 is hit with an eggnog motif, the Kobe 9 comes right out of your stocking, and the LeBron 12 transforms into an Akron birch tree. Let’s get into a little more detail.
Nike Kobe 9 “Knit Stocking”
The Kobe 9 is splashed with a red and white upper offset by a marbled outsole that takes inspiration from a staple of any Christmas gathering, the candy cane. The inside of the tongue comes with a stitched, circular patch that reads “Mamba Greetings”—because Bryant just wants to wish us all a happy holidays. How nice of him.
Nike KD 7 “Egg Nog”
Apparently, Kevin Durant’s favorite holiday beverage is egg nog. Who knew? The KD 7 shoe of the same name features an upper colored red over the tongue and heel before turning a milky, egg nog white over the forefoot—complete with red speckles. The green sock liner features the words “Seat Pleasant,” where Durant was born in Maryland, and “Fresh Since ’88,” Durant’s birth year, in white lettering.
LeBron 12 “Akron Birch”
An emerald green upper hits the holiday LeBron 12, which also features a white snowflake on the tongue loop. The Hyperposite shell displays a birch tree pattern, representing that really wonderful Akron, Ohio winter weather.
