As if Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson weren’t enough, fans of 2K Sports’ popular basketball game can look forward to 12 more NBA legends when the game hits store shelves on Oct. 4. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Julius Erving were announced in early August. The remaining 10 players (recently announced), are: Patrick Ewing, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Karl Malone, Oscar Robertson, John Stockton, Scottie Pippen, Isaiah Thomas, Bill Russell and Hakeem Olajuwon.

In case you don’t agree with 2K’s top 15, chances are you’ll find your favorite legendary NBA players in the game’s Greatest Rivalries mode—a roundabout way of including other deserving superstars, like Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Walt Frazier, Pete Maravich and Elgin Baylor. Matchups you’ll be able to recreate include Russell’s 1964-’65 Celtics vs. West’s Lakers, the heated Pistons vs. Bulls rivalry in the late ’80s and  Malone’s and Stockton’s 1997 Jazz against David Robinson, Tim Duncan and the Spurs. Not to overuse the word, but 2K12 is shaping up to be a legendary game.
Since the ongoing lockout makes it possible (some think “likely”) that the 2011-12 NBA season will be canceled, 2K Sports’ latest basketball offering will be a must-have for hoops junkies. An entire year without our favorite NBA teams and players is a chilling thought, so we are counting on 2K12‘s legends and rivalries to provide our basketball fix this winter.
