MLB 12: The Show is a solid must have for fans of baseball video games and sports simulations in general. Four-time All-Star first baseman and Red Sox slugger Adrian Gonzalez is the cover athlete for this year's edition; but that's obviously not the only new aspect gamers can look forward to when the game releases on March 6. Here are three of the biggest changes:

Creating a truly realistic baseball game means capturing the full gamut of hits that happen on the diamond. That's why The Show's engineering team made it their business to rewrite the ball's physics code for a more authentic experience. You'll see every variation, from slow rollers to high hoppers to screaming liners, all closely resembling how the ball moves in a real MLB game.

Ball Physics

Creating a truly realistic baseball game means capturing the full gamut of hits that happen on the diamond. That's why The Show's engineering team made it their business to rewrite the ball's physics code for a more authentic experience. You'll see every variation, from slow rollers to high hoppers to screaming liners, all closely resembling how the ball moves in a real MLB game.

Collision Awareness

Sony has applied their collision awareness model all across the field. Players will not only collide, they'll be aware of potential collisions. So bang-bang plays at the plate will look more realistic, as will double plays and other contact plays on the base paths.

Pitching Gameplay

Last year's edition featured analog pitching. This year, The Show includes Pulse Pitching, which increases the challenge of pinpointing your pitches. After selecting your pitch and target, you'll have to time your button press to ensure an accurate pitch. The more you're in sync, the smaller the target when you throw the ball, giving you a better chance of smoking one by a perennial slugger. If your timing's off, get used to watching the home run trot animation.
