Word is out that Sigourney Weaver has joined the cast of the highly anticipated fantasy film A Monster Calls.
The movie will also star Felicity Jones (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Liam Neeson. Based on Patrick Ness’s award-winning novel, it follows the story of 13-year-old Conor, who tries to cope with the trauma of being bullied at school and his mother’s terminal illness by escaping into to a fantastical world with the help of a tree monster, whose motives are suspect. The monster first appears to Conor in recurring nightmares after he finds out about his mother’s cancer. Resembling a yew tree in the backyard, the monster entertains the boy with an assortment of strange stories. The fantasy world is dark and treacherous, and filled with dangerous creatures. Things become complicated when the tree monster’s voice follows the boy into the real world, where the consequences could be devastating.
Weaver will play the boy’s tough grandmother, who takes him in after his mother’s death. Neeson is cast in the role of the monster. Jones plays the boy’s dying mother.
Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible) is directing the picture. Bayona is also preparing to shoot the sequel to World War Z. Ness is writing the screenplay.
A Monster Calls is expected to premiere in theaters on Oct. 14, 2016.
