Though many factors are considered by MVP voters, Harden recently stated that wins should be the deciding factor.
According to ESPN, Harden told reporters, “I think that’s the most important thing. I thought winning is what this is about—period. I’m not going to get in-depth with all that, but I thought winning was the most important thing. If you set your team up in a position to have a chance at the ultimate goal, that’s the most important thing.”
Harden has a point.
Forty-five out of the total 61 MVP winners’ teams have finished the season first in their conference, and the past 34 MVPs’ teams have been ranked in the top three of their conference. If Westbrook wins the award, his team would have the fewest number of wins for an MVP in the modern era.
Harden led the Rockets to a 55-27 record, third in the Western Conference and third-best in the NBA this season. Harden is using this argument against Westbrook, who led his team to the sixth seed in the West and the 10th best overall record in the league.
With only a 47-35 record, does Westbrook still deserve the MVP award? Tell us what you think in the comments.
