Report: Akron Football Player Accidentally Shoots Teammate
Akron Zips junior offensive tackle Scott Boyett shot his teammate, receiver Andrew Pratt, after mistaking him for a burglar in his apartment. The teammates live next door to each other, and a late night neighborly visit quickly went awry.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Boyett shot Pratt in the abdomen after Pratt entered his apartment Saturday morning at 3:22 a.m. He then drove Pratt to the ER, where he told police the incident was an “honest mistake.”
Police ruled that no charges will be filed after both men gave the same account of what transpired and agreed it was an accident. Pratt is in stable condition, and police did not list the weapon used in the shooting, nor who owned it.
Pratt, who participated in Akron’s Pro Day last week, posted this Instagram pic to show everyone that he was recovering well.
Akron athletic director Larry Williams released this statement:
“We are saddened and concerned to learn of this situation and we hope that Andrew recovers fully,” he wrote. “While we know the incident occurred at an off-campus location, we will wait to learn more from the Akron Police Department about what occurred. We are keeping Andrew in our thoughts and prayers.”
