Throughout the 2011 Women’s World Cup, STACK will release new episodes of All Eyes on U.S.—a video series documenting the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s journey as they chase their World Cup championship dreams.
The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team kicked off the 2011 World Cup with a brilliant 2-0 win over North Korea. It was no surprise that veteran superstar Abby Wambach helped Team USA by offering up a fantastic service to Lauren Cheney, who delivered a textbook header for the team’s first goal in minute 54. Wambach was later named the “Woman of the Match.”
Wambach foreshadowed this great start when she spoke with STACK while training for the tournament. Asked about her goals for the World Cup, she placed the team’s success over her own. She wasn’t worried about winning the Golden Boot, awarded to the tournament’s highest goal scorer. Confident in her teammates’ abilities, she predicted that any number of them could take home the coveted award.
Wambach’s preparation for the World Cup paid off early in Group Play, as the United States tied for first place with Sweden. It’s also worth noting that the U. S. is the only team to have scored two goals without allowing one, thanks in large part to the stellar performance of goalkeeper Hope Solo.
Wambach and the high-flying U.S. Women’s Soccer Team continue their run for the 2011 FIFA World Cup against Colombia on July 2, at 11:30 a.m. EDT on ESPN.
