Throughout the 2011 Women’s World Cup, STACK will release new episodes of All Eyes on U.S.—a video series documenting the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s journey as they chase their World Cup championship dreams.
The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team begins their pursuit of the World Cup championship tonight, with a game against North Korea. In today’s episode [above], superstars Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd and Hope Solo discuss the importance of their focus and training leading up to the tournament. STACK spoke with them following a grueling training session that made it abundantly clear this team is ready to play.
“The World Cup preparation is something that is a little different than many other preparations, because you have to focus yourself,” says Wambach, who claims the team’s focus got sharper once training began following the 2008 Beijing Olympics. There’s no doubt that this 2011 World Cup squad will be focused going into the tournament. Their determination to bring home the United States’ first World Cup championship since 1999 was obvious during practice.
“It’s been quite a road in this preparation for the World Cup,” says Solo, declaring that the journey has been a lifelong process for her. Adds Wambach, “This is a culmination of many years of preparation and hard work. To be quite honest, I’m thrilled that it’s here.”
The U.S. enters the tournament ranked number one, placing a target on each player’s back before the first whistle blows. But star midfielder Carli Lloyd has a different mindset: “I’m kinda going in there as if we’re an underdog and not a lot of people are expecting us to do good things.”
Wambach agrees, saying, “Well, I don’t look at the number-one seed as anything spectacular or important, because the truth is the number-one team will be standing on the top podium at the end of the World Cup. So, I don’t care what you’re ranked going in, it’s what you’re ranked going out.”
