“Amazing Spider-Man 2” Villain Revealed?
Rumors and speculation about Spider-Man’s next villain reached a fever pitch at the end of last week after Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb posted a picture on his Twitter page. At first the photo appeared to be a generic locker. However, soon after the photo hit the Internet, comic book fans pointed out that the locker bears a close resemblance to the one that gave birth to the villain Venom in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic books.
In the comics, Peter Parker and childhood friend Eddie Brock find Symbiote, an unfinished project linked to a cure for cancer, which their fathers had worked on years earlier. In the comics, the suit melds with Peter and turns him into a nearly indestructible Spider-Man, but negatively impacts his personality. Once Peter rejects the suit, it finds a new host in Brock, who turns into Venom. There are a few variations on who exactly turns into Venom in Spider-Man lore. In the animated series, Harry Osborn (played in the upcoming movie by Dane DeHaan) becomes Venom. So is this a sneak peek of an upcoming plot point or misdirection?
Furthermore, is there even room for another villain in Amazing Spider-Man 2? Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti are already confirmed to portray Electro and The Rhino, respectively. Too many villains in one movie effectively killed Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man series.
More than likely, fans will not get answers to the growing number of questions any time soon, since the film hits theaters on May 2, 2014. But with a cast that includes the return of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone; the introduction of Shailene Woodly as Mary Jane Watso; and the addition of Dane DeHanna and Felicity Jones, the film doesn’t look to disappoint.
