We were excited when Electro was announced as the main villain in Amazing Spider-Man 2, and we were intrigued by hints that we’d also see the Green Goblin. Then whispers about the Sinister Six started getting louder, and the whole thing started to feel like Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 all over again.

Aware that fans are concerned about the number of villains set to appear in the forthcoming sequel, director Marc Webb attempted to allay their fears during a recent chat at SXSW. “We’re obviously familiar with the complaints people had [with the previous trilogy],” he said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “We’re very careful to make sure the stories intertwine. For Peter Parker, it’s very important that you create obstacles that are difficult to overcome.”

Furthermore, according to Webb, Rhino (portrayed by Paul Giamatti) is only “in the movie for four minutes.”

The need to rein in the plot doesn’t mean that the director won’t have some fun. He said he realized just how much Spider-Man deviated from reality when shooting the first film, and he intends to push things even further in the sequel. Why bother making a superhero flick if you’re going to let reality intrude, right?

Webb said, “I’m going to embrace the spectacle. I’m not going to be beholden to smallness. I want it to be fantastic, to be big, to command and express the feeling when you’re a kid and reading the comics. I didn’t want to hide or shy away from that.”

Amazing Spider-Man 2 will reach theaters May 2.
