Arnold Schwarzenegger will star in Lionsgate's apocalyptic zombie film Maggie.
Produced in part by the up-and-coming Lotus Entertainment, the big screen thriller also stars Abigail Breslin. The synopsis, which comes across as more comical than frightening, involves a Midwestern teen (Breslin) whose loving father remains supportive after she contracts a disease that causes her to gradually turn into a cannibalistic zombie.
Steve Beeks, co-chief operating officer and motion picture group president for Lionsgate, said in an announcement: "Maggie has all the ingredients that spell commercial excitement, from a compelling script and an A-list superstar surrounded by a world-class cast. We're delighted to continue our relationship with Arnold Schwarzenegger, who turns in a performance that marks a dramatic departure from his action persona, and partner with our friends at Lotus Entertainment on a film that will resonate with thriller aficionados everywhere."
The cast also features Joely Richardson who recently starred in Vampire Academy, Laura Cayouette (Django Unchained), and True Detective's J.D. Evermore.
Henry Hobson directed the picture. The screenplay was written by John Scott, who is also one of the film's executive producers.
Maggie is expected to be released in theaters early next year.
