News on Upcoming ‘Avatar’ Sequels
Sigourney Weaver will return for all three Avatar sequels. Weaver will play a different role in the new installments, which makes sense, considering her character, Grace Augustine, died in the original James Cameron epic.
Weaver will re-team will cast members Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang and Zoe Saldana.
In a statement, Cameron said, “Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels.”
Avatar earned $2.8 billion following its release in 2009, becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time.
Rumors claiming the second movie will take place under water are false, but there will be some underwater and surface water scenes involving indigenous ocean cultures.
Like the first picture, the sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau via their production company, Lightstorm Entertainment. They will be filmed back-to-back, with the first sequel scheduled for release in December 2016. The second one will arrive in theaters December 2017, and the final picture is due in 2018.
