Ben McKenzie to Star as Jim Gordon in Fox Series
Fox has found its Commissioner Gordon. Ben McKenzie, known for his work on The O.C. and Southland, will play the James Gordon character in his earlier years as a detective in the forthcoming TV series, Gotham. Fox confirmed it won’t miss out on the opportunity to bring Gotham City’s most famous citizen to the small screen.
The series will show Jim Gordon as a college football star and war hero who rises through the ranks of the city’s homicide squad. It will double as an origin story for Bruce Wayne as well as Gordon. According to Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly: “We will follow Bruce Wayne right up until the point where he gets interesting. It’s Gotham teetering on the edge. This is all of the classic Batman characters.”
Many of the characters who are expected to appear, including Penguin, Catwoman and the Joker, will not don costumes in the TV series. “We’re not starting in that world where the villains are in costume,” Reilly said. “You see markers for it that are delicious. You see where the evolution and eccentricity [are], where they become those characters. [But] we don’t start off with capes and costumes.”
Bruno Heller (The Mentalist) wrote the pilot and will serve as the show’s executive producer. Fox has already given it a straight-to-series order, and it is expected to premiere this fall.
