2013 NFL Combine Most Valuable Performances: Offense
Cordarrelle Patterson possesses the ideal blend of size and speed to excel as an NFL wide receiver.
The NFL Combine is more of a track meet than a football event. For this reason, NFL teams and personnel put less stock in a player’s test results than they do in his other Combine activities, such as team interviews and medical exams.
Although a prospect’s performance during testing and on-field drills may neither make nor break his NFL Draft standing, a strong showing can solidify a player’s ranking on a team’s draft board, or lead teams to go back and review tape they may have previously overlooked.
Here, we present the offensive players from each position who registered the Most Valuable Performances at the 2013 NFL Combine.
QB: Geno Smith
Smith measured in at 6’2” and 218 pounds, recorded the fastest 40-Yard Dash time among QBs (4.59 seconds) and threw the ball exceptionally well during on-field position drills. His stock should continue to rise from now until the Draft.
Honorable Mention: E.J. Manuel (4.65 40-Yard Dash // 34″ Vertical Jump // 9’10” Broad Jump)
RB: Knile Davis
This is a guy who ran for more than 1,300 yards and averaged 6.5 yards per carry during his sophomore season at the University of Arkansas. Injuries derailed the remainder of his collegiate career, but Davis made a strong showing at the Combine, posting the second fastest 40-Yard Dash time among RBs (4.37 seconds) and completing 31 reps on the 225-Bench Test.
Honorable Mention: Johnathan Franklin (4.49 40-Yard Dash // 4.31 20-Yard Shuttle)
WR: Cordarrelle Patterson
For a player with little game tape at the Division I level, Patterson did everything he needed to do to solidify his standing as the top wide receiver prospect in the Draft. He ran a 4.42 40-Yard Dash and recorded a 37” Vertical Jump and 10’8” Broad Jump, all impressive numbers for a 6’2”, 216-pound wideout.
Honorable Mention: Ryan Swope (4.34 40-Yard Dash // 37″ Vertical Jump // 10’5″ Broad Jump)
TE: Tyler Eifert
Eifert eased concerns about his blocking ability by weighing in at 250 pounds and displaying good upper-body strength with 22 reps on the 225-Bench Test. A 35” Vertical Jump and 9’11” Broad Jump demonstrated his explosive lower-body power, which will help him perform well as a blocking tight end.
Honorable Mention: Chris Gragg (4.5 40-Yard Dash // 37.5″ Vertical Jump // 10’5″ Broad Jump)
OL: Eric Fisher
Plenty of athleticism was on display in the offensive line group, but we’re giving the edge to Fisher, who is one of this year’s top-rated OTs. He displayed tremendous agility, posting the top 20-Yard Shuttle time in his position group (4.44 seconds) and pairing it with a strong showing in the Broad Jump (9’8”). Fisher may not surpass top-rated OL Luke Joeckel, but his performance at the Combine should secure his standing as the No. 2 prospect at his position.
Honorable Mention: Terron Armstead (4.71 40-Yard Dash // 34.5″ Vertical Jump // 9’4″ Broad Jump)
