Gaming Update: ‘Borderlands 2’, ‘Mass Effect 4’, ‘Hellraid’, ‘Watch Dogs’
This week brought more information on the PS Vita Borderlands 2 multiplayer mode, BioWare’s Mass Effect 4 plans, Hellraid‘s console upgrade and Watch Dog‘s season pass.
PS Vita Borderlands 2 Co-Op Surprise
Due to technical limitations, the PS Vita version of Borderlands 2 will only allow two players in online co-op play, instead of the anticipated four.
“We checked in with the SCEA third-party production team, who confirmed that while they [worked hard] to include four-player co-op in the game, they made a decision late in their development cycle to focus on providing the best two-player-only co-op experience possible,” said SCEA’s Justin Massongill on the PlayStation Blog. “As a result, the maximum co-operative player count for Borderlands 2 on PS Vita is capped at two.”
Borderlands 2 was released for Vita on May 13. It includes six of the post-release DLCs available for the PS3 and will feature cross-compatible saves for those who also have the console version of the game.
Mass Effect 4 Moving Forward
BioWare exec Yanick Roy recently updated fans on the progress of the next Mass Effect title, calling it “somewhere in the middle.”
That’s not much info, but it’s more than we’ve heard in recent months. The title is still shrouded in mystery. The only thing we know for sure about the forthcoming game: it will stray from its predecessors by abandoning the story of Commander Shepard. Even the title is unknown—Mass Effect 4 is used as a reference only, and BioWare views calling the game by that name as “a disservice.”
Earlier this year, Roy tweeted that the team was focused on “doing it right over doing it fast,” so it’s probably unwise to expect the game to come out before the end of the year. A mid-2015 release is more likely.
Hellraid Coming to Xbox One & PS4
Hellraid, Techland’s upcoming co-op slasher, is now coming to PS4 and XBO instead of PS3 and Xbox 360. It will also be released for PC. According to producer Marcin Kruczkiewicz, the decision was made for technical reasons. He told GameSpot, “We decided to move on to new consoles because of the possibilities that they provide. In general, this is the overall quality of graphics, which is [a] significant boost for our game. When we ran our builds on the previous generation of consoles, it just [looked] far worse than we would like. So [on] the new generation of consoles, the power is a bit bigger than the average PC. So it doesn’t limit us at all.”
The title will be released for PC later this year via Steam Early Access. It’s expected to arrive on the other platforms in 2015.
Watch Dogs Season Pass Unveiled, Trailer Released
Ubisoft has revealed details about the Watch Dogs season pass, which will retail for $19.99.
The pass will include three single-player DLCs: the “Breakthrough Pack,” the “Signature Shot Pack” and the “Palace Pack.” It will also includes a new single-player campaign offering gamers the chance to play as hacker T-Bone, and a new mode called “Conspiracy,” set in an alternate universe where the citizens are turned into “cybernetic zombies,” according to Polygon. Of course, costumes and weapons are also featured in the pass, which the developer says will save gamers more than 25 percent versus the cost to purchase the items individually.
Watch Dogs will be released May 27 for PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, XBO and PC. The game is still in the works for Wii U, but Ubisoft told Polygon the season pass will not be available on the Nintendo platform.
