A movie adaptation of the popular video game Borderlands is in the works at Lionsgate. The futuristic game features ambitious humans who journey to planets at the outer edges of the galaxy in search of a better life. Colonists travel to the distant but promising planet of Pandora in hopes of making a quick fortune. When they realize there’s nothing to be gained, they abandon the planet. However, some remain behind, stranded in the lawless place and living in the remnants of  a mysterious, long-dead alien civilization. As Pandora moves closer to the sun, terrifying creatures come out of hibernation and torment the settlers, whose fate seems to depend on alien technology and secrets about Pandora that are hidden in mountainside vault.

Originally developed by Gearbox Software, the game came out in 2009 as the first action-RPG in the series. It was followed by another release in 2012 and a “pre-sequel” in 2014.

The motion picture adaptation is being produced by the father-son team of Avi and Ari Arad, who previously worked together on Iron Man. Avi Arad has a long list of hit action films to his credit, including the Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four franchises

Although specific details about the movie have not yet been disclosed, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger were quoted on Comingsoon.net saying: “Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows. The Borderlands games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”
