Three Suggested New Chants for Brooklyn Nets Fans
The 2012-2013 NBA season was supposed to tip off with the New York Knicks taking on the Brooklyn Nets in their fancy new home, the Barclays Center; but Hurricane Sandy rearranged the schedule and moved that game to last night. The energy level in the building was incredible during the Nets 96-89 overtime win, but there was one problem: that “Broooooooklllllllyyynnnn” chant the crowd used is just not getting it done.
Sure, the players seem to like it, but the crowd can’t commit to it, and the chant tends to float in and out. It’s not high-energy, especially for fans made rabid by having to wait for a home team for fifty years.
With that in mind, here are three suggestions for new Barclays Center “Brooklyn” chants.
“Where Brooklyn At?”
This would be a much more up-tempo chant, but it could work during (or after) big moments. Bonus: the quote is from a legendary Biggie freestyle, and there really should be more Biggie involved with the Brooklyn Nets. The roof would blow off of Barclays during a loud “Where Brooklyn At?” chant at the right beat.
“Hello Brooklyn”
This would be more of a song than a chant, similar to a European soccer song. Jay-Z’s “Hello Brooklyn” has already become embedded in the Nets culture, and a sing-along of the first line of his track would fit in perfectly.
“Hello Brooklyn, how you doin’?” is communal, incorporating the quintessential Brooklyn phrase, “how you doin’?” And doesn’t sound like thousands of people groaning at the same time.
“Brooklyn, We Go Hard”
This is another Jay-Z lyric that works well. Imagine the first few seconds of this track on repeat, shouted by 17,000 fans at the Barclays Center. “Brooklyn, we go hard, we go hard” just sounds more aggressive than the lurching “Brooooookkklllllyyynnnn” chant.
