Q: How do I build muscle and burn fat at the same time? (Micky McGuire, Mich.)
A: The best way to do both is to perform high-intensity workouts with complexes. A complex is a group of demanding exercises performed in succession with no rest. Effective complexes target all the large muscle groups in the body, usually alternating between them to allow slight recovery to one group while another is working. For example, try doing Squats followed by Chin-Ups and then DB Bench. Or, start with an RDL and follow it up with DB Rows and Dips. The fast pace of complex workouts and their engagement of large muscle groups increase the metabolic demand on the body, thus burning fat. Plus, you get all the strength and muscle-building benefits of weight training.
