Rap News Rundown: Cali Swag District, G-Unit, Migos
Last week, a young rapper lost his life, G-Unit attempted a comeback and Migos got their feelings hurt.
Cali Swag District Member Dead at 25
JayAre of the Cali Swag District died June 6. The 25-year-old, who suffered from sickle cell anemia, went to the hospital the day prior and fell into cardiac arrest.
The foursome had shot to fame in 2010 with their single “Teach Me How to Dougie,” and they released a mixtape earlier this year called The District, which featured collaborations with Waka Flaka Flame, Ty Dolla Sign and Nippy Hussle, among others.
JayAre is the second member of the group to die. In 2011, M-Bone was killed in a drive-by-shooting in Inglewood, California. There are now only two living members: C-Smoove and Yung.
G-Unit Reunites, Reportedly Working on Album
G-Unit reunited earlier this month. Fif brought members Young Buck, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo onto Hot 97’s Summer Jam stage to thunderous applause at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The reunion was a huge surprise, considering the group’s public infighting in recent years. Don’t look for Game to rejoin the ranks, however. When asked about the West Coast rapper returning during a Reddit AMA session, 50 responded, “Not a chance.”
The group will attempt to capitalize on its reunion by releasing an album later this year. “You will see an album by late November,” promised Fif during an interview with Good Day Philadelphia.
Migos Responds to 2 Chainz Diss
As Migos’s popularity soars, so does the discussion surrounding their rap style, which has been dubbed “Migos Flow.” Fellow Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz attempted to trace the lineage, and in a recent single claimed it had originated with Three Six Mafia. “Look at my car, how did it get on dem sixes/This flow came from Drizzy, he got it from Migos, they got it from Three Six,” raps Chainz on “Trap Back.”
While he was talking to MTV News, Chainz said the line shouldn’t be viewed as a diss. But the trio has clearly taken offense at his comments. They responded via Twitter and then again during an interview with MTV, adding, “He just mentioned Migos’s name, and as a supposed OG in the game, we feel like you’re supposed to be giving us knowledge and respect us, instead of doing that. That ain’t how we rock, we just don’t rock like that.”
