Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Fastest-Selling Title in Video Game History
Video game history has been made. Just 16 days after its release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 reached $1 billion in sales. Released by Activision on Nov. 8, the game not only hit that milestone faster than any other video game in history (Modern Warfare 2 needed 60 days ), it also got there faster than any movie, hitting $1 billion a day sooner than the 2009 blockbuster Avatar. To date, the Call of Duty franchise has brought in around $6 billion.
This level of popularity means that no other game has a more active multiplayer community than Modern Warfare 3. To date, more than six million players have registered for the game. Modern Warfare 3 does a great job of allowing players to hone their skills in the single-player campaign before taking on their buddies in multiplayer.
The franchise’s popularity is good news for gamers who enjoy adrenaline-laced first-person shooters. According to Activision, the next Call of Duty game is currently in development for a 2012 release—and multiple related projects are in the works.
